Countdown to Style.Uz Art Week: 0 days
The
annual Style.Uz Art Week, a major far-reaching project that plunges
Tashkent into cultural frenzy every fall, is ninety-nine days away. This
year’s Style.Uz is scheduled for October 22-27 and, as its previous
editions, will present an array of exciting events such as art
exhibitions, workshops by leading professionals, fashion shows by local
and international brands, concerts, social events and many more.
Style.Uz 2013 will include the Fourth International Festival
‘Theatre.Uz’, the Third Tashkent International Cinema Forum ‘Golden
Guepard’ and the Seventh Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary
Art.
The Sixth Biennale of Contemporary Art, set up as part of Style.Uz
2011, presented pieces by 100 Uzbek and international artists from 25
countries at 4 exhibition venues across Tashkent. This was followed by
the Sixth Tashkent International Photo Biennale the next year. The Photo
Biennale presented over 20 exhibitions that showcased creations by
prominent photographers from 35 countries. The theme of this year’s
Biennale of Contemporary Art is ‘Various Cultures, One World’, which is
aimed at demonstrating the world through the eyes of various cultures.
Tashkent International Cinema Forum ‘Golden Guepard’ will be held
October 19-24. This year’s edition of the cinematic celebration has been
given the slogan
Per Speculum Et In Aenigmate, a Latin phrase
that means “in an enigma by means of a mirror”. At a press conference
held in June that focused on the upcoming cinema forum the organizers
noted they had received entries from countries that had not participated
previously. As is usual, the cinema forum is expected to be attended by
international film stars and professionals.
Last year several big-name fashion labels presented collections as
part of Style.Uz in Tashkent. These included Hoss Intropia, Temperley
London, Loris Diran, Jacob Kimmie, Versace, Carolina Herrera, Dolce
& Gabbana, Matthew Williamson, and Kamishima Chinami. Moreover, a
group of Uzbek fashion design students and specialists had the
opportunity to learn skills at workshops taught by Birmingham
Metropolitan College and Russian fashion designer Lena Lenskaya.
Another major event that is held in the margins of Style.Uz is
‘Theatre.Uz’ International Festival, which will be held for the fourth
time this year. Last year’s theater festival kicked off with ‘The
Scarlet Sails’ by Alexander Grin and offered new collaborative stagings
with the UK, Israel and Germany as well as workshops by leading theater
professionals and other plays. The agenda of the upcoming festival
promises to be as engaging and exciting.
A brainchild of Gulnara Karimova, Style.Uz Art Week is the
highest-profile culture project in Central Asia launched in an effort to
further develop contemporary and traditional Uzbek arts and fashion.
Now in its eighth year, Art Week has been attended by a large number of
guests from across the world. The international celebrities who have
graced Tashkent Art Week include Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé,
British pop icon Sting, Greek singer Demis Roussos, Italian pop star
Eros Ramazzotti, and ‘Queen of Sophisticated Pop’ Sophie Ellis-Bextor
among others.
