Uzbekistan travel testimonial (USA,  2004 - 2006)

I was fortunate to recently spend 18 months living and travelling in Uzbekistan as a Peace Corps volunteer where I first met the wonderful family that runs UzbekTraveller.com. There is an incredible amount of both ancient and recent history in Uzbekistan that most people do not know about. I spent most of my time in the UNESCO heritage town of Khiva in western Uzbekistan. I loved getting up in the morning to walk through the old city and buy fresh, organic produce from my Uzbek friends at the bazaar. I often explored the maze of streets and alleys that took me past everything from modest mud brick home to enormous architectural gems. The town would shine in the summer sun and look peaceful under a light winter's snowfall. When I had spare time, I would travel to nearby Urgench to participate in the nightlife or to Nukus to see life in Karakalpakistan, a semi-autonomous region within Uzbekistan. Bukhara is absolutely stunning and has some of the most incredible Islamic architecture I've ever seen. Tashkent is a big city, full of museums and restaurants, populated by some of the kindest people I've ever met. My family enjoys travel, but they usually only visit the same old tourist sites in western Europe. They visited me in Uzbekistan and thought it was one of the most unique and beautiful places they had ever seen. If you are looking for something a little bit different, Uzbekistan is the place for you!
